When my son Alexi was in elementary school, his best adult buddy was a librarian at our local branch library and he was her best young helper. He preferred going to the library to the structured after-school program that he also attended. He brought friends with him to the library, often kids from wealthier families who had never been there before. My son remained a volunteer at the library through middle school, working behind the desk to help people check out books and assisting with the setup of their computer system. That library was his home away from home, a place to do his homework, read Harry Potter books and explore online. Years later, the librarians still ask about him. They touched his life and he touched theirs.
