Two new spotlights went live on the homepage this week:

  • Abraham Lincoln, April 15, 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of his assassination.
  • Gunter Grass, the German writer passed away at age 87 on April 13, 2015.

Global Issues in Context

One new portal page was launched: Coal
63 portal pages have been updated this week including:

Science in Context

The 3rd edition of UXL Encyclopedia of Science now appears. This includes nearly 600 updated entries, over 200 new entries, and nearly 700 new images. New entries include topics that are currently in the news such as:

    • Genetically Modified Organisms
    • Higgs Boson
    • Ocean Acidification
    • Sustainability

2 new portal pages are now live:

  • South America
  • Asia
  • The homepage spotlight carousel also includes a featured image for Earth Day.

5 portal pages have been updated:

  • Bridges, Dams, and Tunnels
  • Environmental Science
  • Moon
  • Motion
  • Paleontology
Student Resources in Context
  • 3 new portal pages now appear:
    • Wayne Gretzky (spotlighted on the homepage)
    • Walden (seminal work by Henry David Thoreau) (spotlighted on the home page)
    • Down Syndrome
    • The homepage has been updated to highlight the new pages as well as Holocaust Month, Abraham Lincoln’s assassination 150 years ago, and the end of the Civil War.
  • 15 portal pages have been updated:
    • Ancient Civilization (spotlighted on the homepage)
    • Automobiles
    • Baseball
    • Basketball
    • Cell Phones

  2. Thanks for your comment, Alice. We strive to include a variety of sources in Gale’s In Context resources, including newspapers of different types, scope, and reading levels. This aligns to current literacy standards that require students to gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources and assess the credibility and accuracy of each source. USA Today is a daily general interest newspaper distributed nationally that includes world, national, state, sports, business, finance, and lifestyle news that is useful to student researchers who are looking for information on a wide variety of topics, ranging from academic to general interest to current events.
