Libraries as Relief From Tough Times

1 min read

By Joanne K.

I was 12 years old when my father was hospitalized from June through August, and the library in the city of the hospitalization was within a few blocks of the hospital. My rural community did not have a public library. My mother arranged for me to get a library card as a visitor to this city library, and I was able to go there on my own to get books to read during the long hours my family spent at the hospital. That early exposure to a library made all the difference in my life and I ended up becoming a librarian.

  1. Please let me know the location of the Harrisburg Public Library and year you were 12 years old. I am trying to research and obtain information about this library. Any info would be appreciated. Mary Lou
