Farmington Hills, Mich., Dec. 8, 2009 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, announced today the launch of Curriculum Correlations, a search tool designed to help educators and librarians select resources to meet state and national standards.

Curriculum Correlations contains hundreds of titles from Gale and its imprints – Greenhaven Press, Lucent Books, KidHaven Press, Sleeping Bear Press and Blackbirch Press. By visiting www.galeschools.com, librarians can search Curriculum Corrections by state, subject and grade to locate titles that align to state and federal standards in the areas of language arts, science, social studies, health and physical education.

“Gale and its imprints are committed to helping educators align their coursework, and librarians align their collections, with state and national curriculum standards,” said Jill Lectka, Gale’s senior vice president for circulating and trade publishing. “This tool allows schools to easily locate titles that bolster and complement their curriculum. And to be sure we are staying current, all correlations are continually reviewed and updated by subject area experts using the latest technology.”

Curriculum Correlations takes advantage of EdGate Correlation Services (http://correlation.edgate.com), a proprietary system for identifying content standards and aligning appropriate content to these standards. The EdGate Controlled Vocabulary System™ structure provides a systematic method for identifying the key concepts of a standard, whether it is broad or specific, ensuring the alignment to all applicable standards.

An appendix of primary sources to enhance readers’ understanding of life in modern China

A navigational tool that provides access to all articles by subject and theme

Farmington Hills, Mich., Oct. 27, 2009 – Gale, part of Cengage Learning, today announced the publication of Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of World Literature and Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature.

Each four-volume set covers authors from many periods and genres, building a broad understanding of the various contexts – from biographical to literary to historical – in which literature can be viewed. Each encyclopedia allows the reader to analyze an author’s work as a reflection of the heritage, traditions and experiences of the author’s personal life and the beliefs, events and lifestyles at the time.

“Many reference sources on literature contain only biographical with critical summaries of the author’s works. Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of World Literature and Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature expand on this and also include the study of literature moving from solely a study of literary criticism to include a review of contextual background,” said Meggin Condino, product manager at Gale. “New curriculum standards focus on the relevance of literature to students and their personal response. Beyond providing a contextual framework, these titles include questions to help students frame a response to literature or make connections between their modern lives – for example, a TV show such as Survivor – and literature from past times – such as The Lord of the Flies.”

Entries from Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of World Literature and Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature focus on the author and address his/her works and the context that surrounds them including:

Circumstances in the authors’ lives that are reflected in their work

Historical events affecting their work

Other authors and artists active at the same time

Common human themes – relevant globally – that appear in their work and what other works address those themes

How the author’s works were critically received over time

Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of World Literature and Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature are available in print and eBook format via the Gale Virtual Reference Library.

Farmington Hills, Mich., July 10, 2009 – At a time when the need to re-evaluate, alter or develop careers is greater than ever, Gale, part of Cengage Learning, today announced a new electronic resource offering a comprehensive guide to career change.

Career Transitions is a complete, guided, self-paced application that walks the individual through the process — taking stock of the current situation, assessing strengths and interests, exploring new opportunities, improving chances of getting a job and finally taking the plunge and pursuing the next opportunity. Workers are guided by clear and concise information about career paths, industries, economies and companies – organized around simple-to-navigate portals that combine overviews with statistical information and Web tools to help make well-planned career choices.

“Career Transitions is a one-stop resource for people going through career change,” said David Forman, Gale’s publisher for business products. “Over the past year the number of unemployed in the United States has increased by over 5 million people. The introduction of Career Transitions comes at a time when people need help making life-changing career choices.”

Some librarians report being overwhelmed with requests for materials to assist users who are making job-related decisions. Career Transitions encapsulates the entire job search process, allowing public library users and the librarians assisting them to find answers whether they are dealing with job loss, re-training needs or looking for new career paths.
