University Bids at American Journalism Historians Association Convention, Wins Year of Thomson Gale’s 19th Century U.S. Newspapers
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Nov. 15, 2006 – Georgia State University (GSU) students can step into the past for a unique perspective on 19th century American life, thanks to the school’s acquisition of 19th Century U.S. Newspapers, a new database from Thomson Gale, part of the Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC).
GSU won a free year subscription to 19th Century U.S. Newspapers after Leonard Teel, Professor of Communication at GSU and the founding director of the GSU Center for International Media Educatio n, bid on the subscription during the 25th annual American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA) Convention. Each year, AJHA hosts an auction at the Convention to benefit the graduate students in attendance. The highest bidder in this year’s auction won a free year subscription to 19th Century U.S. Newspapers. Teel’s bid narrowly beat the next highest bid, fetching the highest-ever bid in the history of the auction.
The AJHA convention was held October 11-14 in Wichita, Kansas to discuss the research and teaching of journalism history and to honor AJHA past presidents. The conference was hosted by Dr. Patricia Dooley, Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at Wichita State University’s Elliott School of Communication.
"AJHA couldn’t be happier that Thomson Gale helped us out at this year’s silent auction," Dooley said. "This digital collection of newspapers is promising to be a boon to historians in many fields of American studies. Not only did Thomson Gale help out with the auction, they generously contributed to our convention’s opening reception, making it one of the highlights of the overall program."
GSU has established 19th Century U.S. Newspapers on their library resources page: http://www.library.gsu.edu/databases.
