Award recognizes steps taken to promote learning, boost student achievement
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Feb. 23, 2006 – For the second year, Thomson Gale, part of the Thomson Corporation ( NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC ), is co-sponsoring the TEAMS Award – Teachers and Media Specialists Influencing Student Achievement. This award, granted in conjunction with Library Media Connection, recognizes the critical collaboration between teachers and media specialists in promoting learning and increasing student achievement.
All K-12 public and private schools in the United States and Canada are eligible for the Thomson Gale/Library Media Connection TEAMS Award. Last year’s winners included E.B. Williams Stoner Hill Elementary Laboratory School (Shreveport, Louisiana) , who used its library media resources to spark fifth graders’ interest in American history; Rolla Junior High School (Rolla, Missouri), who developed a collaborative research paper assignment that is combined with competition in the National History Day program; and Beachwood High School (Beachwood, Ohio), who developed the Biography Project — an intergenerational program that creates an opportunity for ninth grade students to connect with another generation through structured interviews.
A panel of education industry professionals and Thomson Gale staff will evaluate award nominations based upon:
- Demonstrated collaboration between media specialists and teachers during the 2005/2006 school year
- Effective techniques that positively impact student learning and achievement (State and National Standards)
- Support received from school leadership
- Ability for others to replicate this best practice
Examples of the types of collaboration that will be considered are:
- Using large-print books to improve student reading scores
- Increasing literacy among struggling readers
- Improving information literacy by educating students about the open Web versus subscription databases
- Using nonfiction materials in classroom libraries to support reading
- Integrating electronic and print reference resources into classroom learning
Three winners will receive
- $2,500 (U.S.) cash award
- Thomson Gale products (approximate value $500 U.S.)
- A one-year subscription to Library Media Connection (approximate value $69 U.S.)
- Educator’s Professional Bookshelf (approximate value $800 U.S.) from Linworth Publishing
- Recognition in a Library Media Connection article in the 2006 school year
Awards will be presented at a special reception held in conjunction with the American Library Association’s annual conference in New Orleans in June 2006.
The nominations must be submitted by library media specialists, teachers, principals, students or parents. Nominations will be accepted beginning April 15, 2006 and must be received by May 1, 2006. There is no nomination fee. However, each nomination must include:
- A completed submission form with appropriate attachments
- A one-page letter of recommendation from a school principal or assistant principal
- A signed release form
- A photograph of the collaborating media specialist/teaching team
