Anita Prieto Will Sign at Thomson Gale Booth; Donation Made to ALA Hurricane Relief Fund
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., June 22, 2006 – Sleeping Bear Press™, an imprint of Thomson Gale, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), is helping rebuild the Gulf Coast’s hurricane-damaged libraries, one book at a time. The publisher is donating $1 from the sale of each of its library-focused children’s title B is for Bookworm: A Library Alphabet to the American Library Association’s (ALA) Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Fund. Anita Prieto, the author, will be signing books in the Thomson Gale booth on Monday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Books will be available for purchase at the booth and at the ALA bookstore.
Almost a year ago, Prieto sat in her Metairie, LA, study putting the finishing touches on B is for Bookworm: A Library Alphabet. Before the picture book, which teaches children about the rich history and inner-workings of the world’s libraries, could ship across the country, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed Prieto’s home and 28 libraries.
“This book teaches kids about how important libraries are to society,” said Margaret Erdman, publisher of Sleeping Bear Press. “We’re putting action behind the words in the book. Libraries are cornerstones of neighborhood development and the faster we can get the libraries back up and running, the faster those communities can recover.”
According to records being kept by the Louisiana Library Association, more than 50 public libraries and more than 100 school libraries were damaged or destroyed by the hurricanes in Louisiana alone. The librarians’ reports tell of hundreds of thousands of volumes swept away, whole buildings moved by water surges, roofs gone and fish covering parking lots. The ALA’s relief fund will channel funds to state library associations, allowing them to rebuild libraries throughout the Gulf Region.
"Dozens of libraries were severely damaged or destroyed and desperately need our help in order to rebuild and repair facilities, purchase computers, buy books and bring back staff,” said Keith Michael Fiels, ALA executive director. “The ALA Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund will help these libraries get back on their feet. We are proud and thankful of the efforts of publishers and vendors such as Sleeping Bear Press, who are leading the way in these library reconstruction efforts. Their efforts will really make a difference in those communities."
In addition to the funds contributed by Thomson Gale to Hurricane Katrina disaster relief, Thomson Gale employees attending ALA’s Annual Conference in New Orleans plan to participate in ALA’s daylong community service efforts. Thomson Gale is sponsoring volunteer buses and is supplying baseball caps for volunteers.
