Thomson Gale Announces Secondary Spring Series

Titles from Lucent Books, Greenhaven Press focus on crime, law

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Feb. 21, 2006  New for spring, Thomson Gale, part of the Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), announces the release of two new circulating series for secondary students  one focused on crime scene investigations; the other on the most popular, most contentious issues argued in American courts today .

Lucent Books® Crime Scene Investigations series examines the fascinating world of the criminal investigator and other professionals who are on the frontline of solving today’s (and some of yesterday’s) most notorious crimes. Sidebars offer crime statistics, information about careers in criminal investigation or law enforcement, descriptions of unusual cases, and step-by-step explanations of scientific and legal processes. Others facilitate critical thinking by presenting crime-busting facts versus fiction. Also included are bibliographies for further research; full-color photographs, charts, and graphs; and a detailed index.

The five spring titles in the Crime Scene Investigations series include:

  • Arson  Gives an up-close look at how arson units, forensic chemists, and other investigators sift through the ashes and debris in order to identify fire-starters
  • Bombings — Explains the many ways explosives experts can find the most helpful clues from the tiniest scraps of evidence
  • The Medical Examiner  Demonstrates how autopsies, collection of trace evidence and the unique perspective of forensic pathology makes sense of a corpse’s clues
  • Murder — Details the techniques used in crime labs throughout the country to unravel real-life murder mysteries and help bring the guilty to justice
  • Murder in Mississippi: The 1964 Freedom Summer Killings — Describes how the 1964 murder of three young civil rights activists by white supremacists was resolved in 2005

The four fall titles include The Birmingham Church Bombing, The O.C. Sniper Shootings, The Forensic Anthropologist and Forgery.

Issues on Trial , from Greenhaven Press  , captures the passion and depth of today’s most pressing legal debates and provides an ideal resource for research on social issues. Each volume focuses on a specific issue and examines how the courts have helped to shape that issue through their rulings. Primary sources include the text of court rulings and dissenting opinions, as well as contemporaneous analysis and opinion on the rulings. Secondary sources provide retrospective evaluation of the courts’ decisions and their legacies.

The four spring titles in the Issues on Trial series include:

  • Civil Liberties and War
  • The Environment
  • Reproductive Rights
  • Students’ Rights

The five fall titles include The Death Penalty , Freedom of the Press , Racial Discrimination , Rights of the Accused and Individual Rights on Trial.
