SAGE Publications

SAGE Publications was started in 1965 by Sara Miller McCune and her late husband, George McCune. The name they chose for their venture represented their sense of collaboration – SAGE stands for SA – from Sara – and GE – from George. The company has since grown to become one of the world’s leading independent academic publishers.Stephen Barr, a managing director of SAGE UK, believes SAGE has retained a distinctive and competitive style from its early days.

“We were set up when the social sciences were going strong and U.S. higher education publishing was divided into two: college textbook publishers and university presses doing monographs,” Barr explains. “There was no one in the middle doing academic books for students and faculty. SAGE went into that area, which required a different kind of marketing. We realized SAGE would need to market directly to the professional staff, which at that time was unique.”

From these beginnings, SAGE has grown both organically and through acquisition and has moved out into new fields. Despite the expansion and commercial success, the company retains much of its1960s enthusiasm.

SAGE Publishing is one of the earliest and most popular publishing partners available on Gale Virtual Reference Library. There are 76 SAGE titles currently available.

For some reason, posts to the blog from as far back as this date only showed up in my blog reader on October 5! Is there a problem with the blog feed?

  2. This may be a result of our recent blog platform move. We’ll be blogging the details about our full makeover later today. If you continue to have issues with your feed let me know and I’ll ask our tech team for guidance. Thanks for the comment! – Harmony
