China's One-Child Policy Lesson Plan

Studies/ Sociology/ Global Issues

9-11th grades

1-2 class periods (1-2 hrs)

 

 

Objective:  The students will research and develop an understanding and opinion on China’s one-child policy.  The student will complete a variety of tasks during research including; analyzing information, retrieving selected data, comparing data, forming opinions, charting data.

 

Preparation: 

-The teacher will arrange for access to Global Issues in Context (reserve computer lab)

-The teacher will provide introduction to China’s one-child policy and the Baby-Boomers of the U.S. as needed

-The teacher will prepare copies of attached activity sheet

 

Procedure:

-Students will read assigned articles from Global Issues in Context and conduct further research as needed (as detailed on attached activity sheet) and complete tasks/ questions

 

 

Teacher Tips:

-Plan accordingly as some of the activities will work great for homework assignments and others will be best if completed in the classroom

-Preview questions and tasks and adjust as needed per your classroom structure

-Possible extension activities for this lesson are; debate, persuasive essay writing

 

Modifications:

-Extended time for reading, research and writing/ chart preparation

-Allow for use of Read Speaker for struggling readers/ visually impaired/ ESL students

-Provide specific length requirements for open ended questions

-Allow use of line paper for writing
