Slavery and the Emancipation Proclamation Lesson Plans

Students will form an opinion about reparations for slavery, examine the Emancipation Proclamation and explore and analyze speeches by Martin Luther King Jr.

Discussion Guide

Lesson Plan 1- Reparations for Slavery

Objective:  Students will conduct research and analyze the issue of reparations for slavery. Students will express their opinion via debate, speech or persuasive essay.

Lesson Plan 2- The Emancipation Proclamation 

Objective:  Students will explore the document and examine its strengths and weaknesses.  Students will demonstrate their findings via creative projects.

Lesson Plan 3- Analyzing MLK Jr Speeches

Objective:  Students will view and analyze MLK Jr.’s I Have a Dream speech
