In Other News: Charlie Hebdo

A look at a current news item through the lens of different Gale electronic resources. For the past several months, I’ve written a (nearly) weekly post focusing on the varied types of research materials available to users of our eBook platform, GVRL. But that’s just the beginning. Starting this week, I’ll be alternating between GVRL and Gale’s other electronic resources.

By Michelle Eickmeyer

J’adore Paris au printemps. Et en été, et à l’automne, et l’hiver. Paris holds some of my favorite memories, and now a bit of heartbreak.

The attacks against the Charlie Hebdo staff was horrifying. In principle, the idea that killing someone who says/does something you don’t like is atrocious, cowardly, and undermining to your cause. But life is rarely as easy as that and understanding the values and beliefs of participants on either side often make it more difficult to see a clear common ground. Sadly, acts like this make it impossible to keep/gain a level-head. Proponents will cheer while opponents jeer. Both loudly, toward each other, without the ability to hear the other. It remains to be seen if that can be improved with time. History would indicate a cautious probably not.

Getting to Know U: Hiroshi

By Robert Lisiecki

Welcome back for another edition of Getting to Know U. Today, we’re going to meet Hiroshi, a tenured professor of Materials Since in the Engineering Library.

Before we get into Hiroshi and his needs, let’s define materials science. It’s an interdisciplinary field that deals with discovery and design of new materials. And, as a tenured professor, Hiroshi teaches, conducts original resource, and heads a lab with several graduate students working under him. He deals with both undergraduate and graduate students.

Let’s be clear, labs and experiments are a major focus for Hiroshi and his students. They need to do physical research through experimentation to make discoveries, engage in practical learning, and become immersed in materials science. This part of the job doesn’t necessarily require any kind of database help from the library.

Getting to Know U: Naomi

By Melissa Rayner

Before you turn to your closest colleague and whisper, “Hey, Bethany, either Gale forgot how to spell or is about 5 years behind the times when it comes to cutesy text speak,” let us explain ourselves.

While we’re always striving to better understand our customers, this isn’t about getting to know YOU. It’s about helping you understand U—Gale U, that is. And Gale U is about helping you better understand and meet the needs of your library’s users.

Still not making much sense? Allow me to break it down…

Gale U is our answer to an evolving academic landscape. It’s our way of putting real names, faces, and stories to the kinds of people who frequent the library, explaining their needs and challenges, and providing creative solutions.

And this post marks the first in a new weekly blog series that will introduce the people of Gale U one at a time. We believe there’s no better place to start than with Naomi, our resident Undergraduate Services Librarian.
