Finding Community and the World

Moving to Michigan in January made it pretty hard for a stay-at-home dad and a pre-schooler to meet new friends twenty years ago. My husband and son found that the children’s rooms in two different community libraries brightened that first lonely winter considerably. The librarians were so taken with my son’s enthusiasm for maps and flags after seeing him pull down atlases that were about half as tall as he was that when the new ones came in, they gave him the older ones to take home. My son went on to the state level of National Geographic’s Geography Bee twice thanks in part to those books and the interest the librarians showed. And finding some nice, smart grown-ups to talk with saved my husband from a serious case of cabin fever as well as giving him lots of good insights into the area.Nike News
