Content Updates for Gale’s In Context (week ending 10/9/2015)

New content has been added and existing content updated in a number of Gale’s In Context products.

Biography In Context
New homepage spotlights have been posted that include the “hotspot” feature. This feature allows users to hover over portions of an image on the home page enabling a pop-up window to appear with fast facts about the topic or links to additional content.

Spotlights for October are:

  • Baseball’s legendary Yogi Berra, who recently passed away at the age of 90, in honor of Italian American heritage month.
  • Michael J. Fox and the 30th anniversary of the movie “Back to the Future”.
  • British actor Andrew Lincoln, featured with cast members from “The Walking Dead”, which makes its 6th season premiere October 11th on the AMC network.
  • Italian Prime Minister: Matteo Renzi, along with the leaders of Germany, France, and Great Britian, as they try to work together to address the intensifying migrant crisis.
  • Women’s basketball legend and Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2015.

A featured video has been posted that highlights Berlin’s Wall of Lights, as a nod to the 25th anniversary of German reunification this month.

New spotlights have been added to the homepage that include the “hotspot” feature. This new feature provides additional information about the image. Users hover their cursor over the image enabling pop-ups to appear with fast facts about the topics or links to additional content. The new spotlights are:

  • Paleontology (with linking to fossil dating and a video on a new dinosaur species)
  • Oil Spills (with information on bird deaths from the Deepwater Horizon oil spills, which occurred five years ago)
  • Bridges, Dams, and Tunnels (with information on the new Three Gorges Dam in China)
  • Solar Cycle (with links to the Aurora Borealis, and a video on space weather)
  • Medical Imaging (with a link to the article on CT use by archeologists)

Just over 40 new images appear in the product featuring such topics as:

  • Hurricane Katrina, 10 years later
  • Pluto and Mercury
  • The Recent Legionnaire’s disease outbreak
  • Floods in Myanmar and India

In the last two weeks 76 portal pages have been updated. Highlights include updates on the newly forming El Nino and its impact on weather over the coming year and the wildfires in California. Other updated portal pages include:
