For nearly 100 years, the most outstanding contributions to children’s literature have been recognized with the Newbery Medal, one of the most prestigious literary awards in the United States. In its inaugural year, Hendrik Willem van Loon was recognized with the medal for The Story of Mankind, an exploration of the history of Western civilization underscored with personal anecdotes. Now, 99 years later, Tae Keller has been awarded the Newbery for When You Trap a Tiger, a book that considers her identity and heritage through her grandmother’s stories.
Once again, Thorndike Press is proud to publish the Newbery Medal winner and select Newbery honors in large print. Our format helps develop reading skills, including decoding, improved tracking and reading fluency, and stronger reading comprehension. Add large print to your youth collection and see the difference this format can make with struggling and striving readers.

Newbery Honors:
Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
ISBN: 9781432881214
Two sisters, Della and Suki, are linked by love and trauma. Each turn feels worse than the last: a meth-cooking mom headed to prison, mom’s creep of a boyfriend with ill intentions, temporary placement with a less-than-loving caretaker. As Della and Suki stumble and fall, they find their own voices and their way back to each other. Fighting Words is a powerful novel that explodes the stigma around child sexual abuse and leavens an intense tale with compassion and humor.
“At once heartbreaking and hopeful.”
— Kirkus (starred review)
“Honest [and] empowering . . . An important book for readers of all ages.”

We Dream of Space by Erin Entrada Kelly
ISBN: 9781432884703
Thirty-five years ago, countless Americans, including millions of schoolchildren, watched as the space shuttle Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after launch. Set in 1986, this novel uses that tragedy as the backdrop for the story of three middle school siblings—Cash, Fitch, and Bird. Raised in an unpredictable and tense household, each of them exists in their own orbit. As the fated day unfolds, it changes all their lives and brings them together in emotional and unexpected ways.
“A captivating story about family’s enduring bonds.”
— Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat
Available August 2021
Themes of love and compassion and reminders of Buddhism-practicing family members are central to Soontornvat’s fantasy, set in Thailand. Inspired by Les Misérables, it follows Pong, born in Namwon Prison, who dreams of freedom and walking the town’s magically lit streets. Upon escape, he discovers the outside world has its own injustice, as his prison tattoo and dark past put a fresh start seemingly out of reach. Nok, the prison warden’s perfect daughter, is determined to track Pong down, while facing hard truths about her family secrets.
“An important book that not only shines a light but also shows young readers how to shine their own. Luminous.”
