AI has the potential to transform today’s educational landscape. At Gale, we’re taking an intentional approach to AI, guided by the practical needs of our customers.

In DATIA’s 2024 report, AI in K12 Education, over half of respondents said they strongly believe AI can help teachers be more efficient, allowing them to focus on instructional quality and student engagement. Survey results indicate that educators are seeking AI tools that will help them automate tasks and create individualized learning materials to fit a variety of student needs.1

From extensive customer feedback and industry data, Gale understands K-12 schools need help meeting the needs of students with varying reading abilities and aligning content to standards. These insights guided the development of our latest AI feature, which provides teachers with a reliable, safe, and quick way to adapt instructional content on the fly to support student learning.

Gale In Context: For Educators is now equipped with an AI Leveler tool that gives teachers complete control to adapt Gale content to various student reading levels. With this feature, educators can ensure materials are appropriately challenging or accessible, catering to the unique needs of individual students without compromising rigor or alignment to standards.

The AI Leveler will enable teachers to confidently support differentiation in the classroom and create an environment where all learners thrive.

Teachers can use the AI Leveler to adjust any Gale content, which will be marked with a new “AI Leveling Available” tag in Gale In Context: For Educators search results. Access to the Leveler workspace is available in the My Tools panel.

After selecting a document, teachers can adjust the reading level with just a few clicks. Educators can efficiently level content at scale by creating and saving multiple versions to fit the needs of various students.

Once they’ve generated their AI-leveled document, educators can also edit and excerpt content before assigning it to students. This gives teachers more control to customize instructional content, from adding formatting to support student comprehension to removing content that isn’t relevant to their instruction.

Only educators will have access to the AI Leveler in Gale In Context: For Educators, but when they share leveled content with their classes, students will still be able to use all Gale tools—from notes to text adjustments and translations. For added transparency, leveled content will have a new citation in the student view to note that it’s AI-generated.

Gale takes a teacher-first approach to AI development. The AI Leveler tool is built on the valuable insights and expertise of educators who understand the everyday challenges of the classroom, including educator needs, pain points, and workflow requirements. Throughout development, features were continuously tested to ensure alignment with educators’ goals and preferences. In fact, 94 percent of survey respondents rated the quality of the Leveler output very good or good, and 100 percent said they would use the tool if it were available to them.

Gale is releasing the AI Leveler in beta. We will continue to gather feedback from users to make improvements and inform future AI initiatives.

Teachers and curriculum directors use Gale In Context: For Educators to fuel instruction with current, appropriately rigorous materials covering varied perspectives on cross-curricular topics. Daily content updates and continuous technology improvements ensure teachers have access to the most relevant instructional content and innovative features.

The new AI Leveler is the latest example of the ongoing enhancements added to Gale In Context: For Educators. Existing subscribers have full access to the AI feature at no additional cost, and new customers will get automatic access upon subscribing.
